Our club has
some of the best flying sites in the country. Visit with us a while. You might
just want to come on down and join in the fun with us! Besides, what other club
do you know of that has SEVEN FLYING FIELDS?
The Northwest
Florida Modelers, Inc. was established in early 1970 and our first club
president Gordon Dey is still flying with us today. Additionally, founding
members Tom Sirmon and Danny Hiller are still active in club activities. During
the early days of the club, monthly meetings were held at the home of the
members. We have grown from about 10 members to our current status of over
200!
Our first club field was Bagdad field, just south of Milton. We
later added Ellyson field and Site 6. As the Navy made changes, we lost Bagdad
and Ellyson field to the city for use as industrial parks. The Navy sold Site 6.
However, we picked up the use of Spencer Field, Saufley Field, and Blue Angel
Recreation Park (also known as Bronson Field). In addition, we have recently
added Holley Field in Navarre and Santa Rosa Field.
Within the past
few years the Escambia County Model Park rose from an old landfill site. It
boasts two paved runways and covered pavilions in the pit area. The flying field
is named Fritz Field in honor of a member who dedicated many years in its
inception and development. Additionally, we periodically utilize the Pine
Forrest High School gym for indoor flying. As you can see, we have many great
flying sites
Through the years, several major competitions and events
have been hosted by our club. We flew at many of the Blue Angels Homecoming Air
shows. We have hosted two F3A (Pattern) World Championships, as well as USA Team
Selection contests for both Pattern and Helicopters. Other major events such as
the SAM Champs and Rally of Eagles have been held at club fields in recent
years.
As our constitution states, our goals have been to expand
flying of all types of radio control model aircraft. This includes helping
youngsters to become involved in R/C as well.
Now into the 21st
Century, we look forward to what the future holds for us!
